Preliminary design completed by Greenline Architects for a new Grant Center gymnasium building behind the existing Moses Jackson Center on the corner of West Street and Barnes Drive and the renovation of the west end of the Moses Jackson Building of two large underutilized storage rooms into a Fitness Room and Weight Room. Preliminary design was presented to the neighborhood on September 24, 2019. We are ready to proceed with full design.

Survey of the site is complete. A design kick-off meeting for the Grant Center Gymnasium has been scheduled for July 3rd with City staff and Greenline Architecture. A new gymnasium with locker rooms will be designed behind the Moses Jackson Center, and the west end of the Moses Jackson building will be renovated into fitness and weight rooms. Once the new gym is complete, the existing Grant Center will be demolished and a parking lot will be constructed in that location.

A presentation was made to Council Workshop on 2/28/19 presenting options for the Grant Center (& also Hudson Hill). Mayor and Aldermen decided on the option to add a new gymnasium with locker rooms behind the Moses Jackson Center, renovate the west end of the Moses Jackson building into fitness and weight rooms, and construct a parking lot on the existing Grant Center site. Additional funding must be identified, and existing funding can be used to start design. A topographic survey of the sites is underway. A proposal for design has been requested from the on-call annual contract architect.

During the 4th quarter of 2018, several sites were being evaluated and considered as a possible alternate location for the Grant Center on the west side of Savannah. Staff prepared a Site Feasibility Report based on information gathered, and further provided information on geotechnical conditions of each site. This information is currently under review.

City staff continues to investigate alternate opportunities for a new Grant Center.

Staff explored the feasibility of several options for the Grant Center. Options explored included renovating the current center, acquiring more property to expand the center, only expanding the center on the current property and building the center on the open space area next to the playground in Sustainable Fellwood. City staff continues to investigate alternate opportunities for a new Grant Center.

Meetings were held with the West Savannah Executive committee and West Savannah residents at the monthly organization meeting to discuss options for conceptual plan. Options are to renovate current center; include Grant Center on upcoming SPLOST, and if passed, acquire more property so center can be expanded; only expand center on city owned property at current location; or explore building center on the open space area next to the playground in Sustainable Fellwood. Follow up meeting with concept designs will be held in April.

Current conceptual plan includes gymnasium with bleachers,multi-purpose space,restrooms,office space,storage space,kitchen and computer lab. Additional parcels are needed for this project.

Currently in the conceptual design phase.Additional land is being identified for project near current center location.There have been no expenditures to date on this project and the $26,951.00 expenditure will be corrected.
